If you are an avid gamer who absolutely loves video games then at one point or another I am sure you have thought that a career in the video game industry would be a dream and exactly what you were meant to do.
Most people believe getting a job in the video game industry is a virtual impossibility and very unrealistic. The problem with these people that believe that a job in the video game industry is impossible is that they are the same people that never try to actually do anything and go on word of mouth. The fact of the matter is that getting job in the video game industry, espeically as a video game tester, is a lot easier then people think.
At first, being a video game tester isn’t the most lucrative job in the world and to be honest isn’t the most desirable job in the world either after you actually get your foot in the door. In fact, unless you really have a passion for gaming and the video game industry then I suggest you look for another career because you will most likely get sick and tired of this job extremely fast.
Even though testing video games seems like a dream job for almost anyone it really isn’t if you aren’t absolutely obssessed with gaming.
As a video game tester you tasks will be to basically play the same part of a game in which there are glitches over and over and over again and report what you see. Not only will you almost certainly hate the game you are testing after seeing the same part of the game hundreds of times over an eight hour period, but you will almost have to document what you see and have very good communciation skills in terms of writing.
Then again, if you love gaming and are very patient and have your eyes set on being a designer or just making a career in the video game industry then this is your dream job!
So the answer is yes. A video game tester is a very realistic job, but it doesn’t come without it’s fair share of cons to go with the pros.
